Hi - thankyou to everyone for the warm welcome and advice in my newly diagnosed thread a couple of weeks ago. Sorry not to have posted more but I have struggled with gritting my teeth to the end of term (4 days to go) and getting used to new meds and diagnosis. etc

I have noticed one thing, since being on the full dose of MTX that my tongue feels almost burnt and numb straight after taking them. I took them about an hour ago and the place where they touched my tongue in the brief moment before I swallowed them with a drink feels peculiar, as it has for the past 3 weeks. Does this make sense to anyone?

Another thing I wondered is if anyone has recommended an info leaflet or similar for family/colleagues/friends to read about RA. People think it is a sign of old age or that they also have a 'touch of RA' in their knee, hip etc.

Just wanted to say how helpful the site is - really grateful for all I have read and learned XX Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

I take 25mg of MTX weekly in tablet form and have never experienced what you are describing. I think that sounds a bit odd and I would definitely mention it to your GP or maybe speak to the pharmicist as an initial precaution.

Let us know what they say

I do know that mtx must be swallowed immediately and that you mustn't lie down for at least half an hour after taking it. This is because it could damage your food pipe on the way down, so maybe it can cause mouth probs as well. Best to get it checked out with your GP though as it's strong stuff!!!

Have you had a look at the range of booklets NRAS do? There is one especially that is very useful to hand in to your employers which explains all about it and how it could affect your work and what your rights are.
I know that MTX can cause mouth problems but I've not heard of an immediate reaction like yours. I would ask your rheummy if you have one.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Gosh I have never been told this Jean!

I would ask the rheumy or the GP about this just to be safe.

MTX can cause mouth soreness and ulcers.

Love,

Amanda

hello

I have a sore tongue and it is nothing to do with MTX.

http://www.dentalhealth....detail.php?LeafletID=18

Any changes to tongue should be checked out by a doctor really though!

As for information- there is lots on this site

you can order a bk from arthritis care here- http://www.arthritiscare...tUs/Merchandise/WomenRA

Here are some great online resources-

http://www.nras.org.uk/a...t_is_ra/what_is_ra.aspx

http://www.arthritisrese...eumatoid_arthritis.aspx

You can get a booklet about it from your rheumatology nurses or download one here

I have found the analagy here of "the spoon theory" helpful

Ooh, I didn't know that about not laying down for half an hour either! Must remember that.

I know that a lot of the meds do cause problems with the tongue and mouth (I've had ulcers and stuff) but I've never experienced what you describe, Ailsa, so I'd go with the advice already given and mention it to your gp.
